Apple delays W1-equipped BeatsX earphones until February 2017

While Apple’s online store this morning began accepting orders for $159 AirPods ahead of their Christmas delivery, another pair of earphones from Apple that use W1 chip just got delayed.

AirPods production said to kick off in December

A report earlier this week alleged that one of Apple’s European resellers told a customer it would receive first AirPods stock on November 17 and start selling the earphones by November 18-19.

KGI: Apple’s wireless AirPods will be high-end, use a bespoke low-power Bluetooth chip

Apple’s wireless headphones, likely to be called “AirPods”, will take advantage of an in-house designed Bluetooth chip and be marketed as a high-end alternative to the Beats brand, which itself will be positioned in the mid-range market, according to a note by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In his report to clients, a copy of which was obtained by MacRumors, Kuo writes that Apple’s custom-designed chip improves Bluetooth reliability, sound quality and battery performance for longer battery life versus an off-the-shelf chip…. Read the rest of this post here

tvOS 10 tidbit: download prompt for companion apps for your Bluetooth accessories

In addition to helping you manage your HomeKit accessories remotely through the fourth-generation Apple TV, tvOS 10 beta also packs in expanded support for a wider variety of Bluetooth accessories. It’s interesting that after connecting an accessory to the Apple TV, tvOS 10 puts up a prompt offering a user to download a companion App Store app.

The same hardware accessories download prompt first appeared on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch following the iOS 3 software update back in September 2009, but this is the first time we’ve seen it implemented on tvOS…. Read the rest of this post here

Responding to Nilay Patel’s controversial article on The Verge, titled “Taking the Headphone Jack Off Phones Is User-Hostile and Stupid”, Daring Fireball’s John Gruber pulls out the floppy drive analogy.

As you know, the next iPhone is rumored to ditch the industry-standard 3.5mm jack in favor of Bluetooth and Lightning-based headphones.

Gruber goes on to compare Nilay’s arguments against removing the century-old analog jack from mobile devices to the similar arguments that had been made in response to Apple’s decision to ditch the good ol’ floppy drive from the iMac in 1998 for USB…. Read the rest of this post here

Bluetooth Special Interest Group (BSIG) is prepping to announce Bluetooth 5 next week. The next major revision of the popular short-range wireless standard will bring four times faster data transfer and two times the range of the current Bluetooth 4.2 standard, BSIG Executive Director Mark Powell said in an email to Blue Maestro, a United Kingdom health and monitoring company. The new Bluetooth standard will be formally announcement at a media event on June 16 in London….
